Santa Lucia day at Summerfield school

Today Calen's class delivered cookies to the rest of the school grades. They were all in white and for every grade someone wore a hat of candles and gave them a basket of cookies. Calen said it was fun and he is glad he went. He also said that it was fun to get to see the high school students.

Here is the most recent letter from Calen's Teacher to the parents of the class.
Dear Families,

The children had a wonderful time sharing a slice of our second grade morning with their visitors on Grandparents’ Day.  They proudly showed our songs and poems, recited birthday verses and tongue twisters, acted out what they remembered from our recent St. Nicholas story and read the stories in their Main Lesson books.  We especially enjoyed inviting our visitors to join us in a beanbag passing game that proved more difficult than it looked!  And the children sang beautifully for the assembly - as they filed in carrying their lanterns and singing so sweetly, I saw the visitors’ faces light up like the lanterns we carried.

This week we will begin our next number block, with a focus on the magical patterns to be found in multiplication.  Led by our trusty advisor, Sir Tegman Times, we will shine light on the multiplication tables and practice them in various active ways.  We will hear more about Saint Nicholas, and then move on to stories of Santa Lucia, both of which will live strongly with us in the next few weeks.  We will also prepare for our Advent Spiral, which will take place next Monday at 6:30 pm.

As we move into the holiday season, our second grade festivals place particular focus on the light and warmth that we, as human beings, bring into the cold and darkness of winter.  These are not only seasonal celebrations, but a timeless quest, an opportunity to connect with our own inner light, the spark of divinity in ourselves and each other.  This task is especially relevant for the second grader, whose yearning for the light competes so obviously with his shadow side.  Through the growing consciousness of their feeling life, every child in our class is becoming aware of the polarities of light and dark, good and bad, and is showing that growing awareness through their behavior.  I see this in the class not only in the form of mischievous or rebellious behavior, but also in the strong emotions that color the children’s interactions and observations of each other.  It is important to remember that your child did not learn this from someone else.  Uncomfortable though it is to us, this phase is a healthy and necessary part of their growth, as they approach the transitions that come with the 9 year change.  (More to come on the 9 year change, at our January Parent Evening.)

All that said, our second grade class is more formed, more capable and less reactive than they were as a class in first grade.  Even with the animal mischief, they are doing great! And I want to assure you that I do not tolerate misbehavior for very long.  Because I know they are more capable than before, I respond more quickly with a consequence for individuals or for the class, and we go on with our activities.  Even the most rascally character truly wants to be helpful and good, and so our plants get watered, our pencils sharpened, our floor swept and so on, while the helping child gets a reminder of who s/he is really capable of being.  Other times they need space to calm themselves and find their center, whether this is in working with wax in the back of the room, sitting outside on the bench or walking outside.  Sometimes a child is unable to stop themselves and shows me that they need a resting day at home.  My response varies with each child, as each of them has different needs, and I strive to meet those unique needs with creativity and warmth as well as with clarity and clear boundaries.  Yet even with this in my awareness, the majority of my attention remains with our learning and the good work that the children are doing, which they continue to do with focus and care.  I am proud of them and always delighted by their lively, engaged souls.

Thank you for placing your trust in me, for helping to hold the class through your intention and care, and for bringing your concerns directly to me.  I truly appreciate the feedback you give, and I encourage you to call or see me with any questions or issues as soon as they come up, so that I can acknowledge and address them right away.

With peace and appreciation,
~Annemarie

Playing in the rain

After a few days of really hard rain I was stir crazy and wanted to go outside and I just couldn't get bryce out the door with me to play in the rain. When, I saw Alyson and Serena and her friend walking down the street, I got my opportunity. All it took was telling bryce that I saw them outside and he was out the door. The result? As you can see we jumped off a large pile of dirt into a giant puddle. That day I went to buy some knee High muck boots so that I could join the fun.

Puddle riding in the rain

Calen is at nature camp, steph is at cranial secral class and bryce and I were left to have some fun in the short break between rain storms. We put on our best rain gear and jumped on the weehoo and ended up at ragel park pretty dirty looking for chestnuts.

Remote control cars and cookies

Bryce has two favorite things. Remote control cars and sweets. The awesome aspect of them having an allowance is that this power child has all the control. we went out to Sears today and he saw some wheels that he wanted to buy buy he didn't have enough money. Then we past these remote control trucks and he barely had enough allowance to buy it so he did. So many great lessons were taught in those moments of making decisions. Everything from delayed gratification to simple math. Calen was there to help, he is always the teacher and friend to his little brother. As for the cookie, it is dessert night and we traded gluten and dairy free cookies for rice pudding at our favorite local restaurant.

Bodega Bay, Ca sand dunes and beach.

These are photos of the boys playing on giant sand dunes near bodega bay, ca. We went with our neighbors Alyson, Ian, and Serena Butterfield. We also played on the beach and in the ocean which was amazing warm for the time of year.

Bryce's first run.  He was so excited that he went back when the rest of us were done and at the beach.

View from the top

Calen on the climb up.  he loved it.

there was this really cool dune that you could just off of and get serious air with a soft landing.  Here is Calen taking the jump.

Collage of remote control cars

You know that a little boy is thinking about remote control cars when he draws a picture of a dozen or so with the remote control. Bryce spent some time on this. He and calen recent got new remote control cars and that has been the focus.

Thanksgiving wild turkey

Jeff cooked a Turkey that he and a friend hunted in a weber kettle grill with charcoal over a three hours. Calen said that it was the best turkey he had ever eaten. This is a photo of Bryce with a bone of meat in his hand. He is pretty picky and he liked it as well. One large wild turkey has enough meat for a few meals.

Geocache find!

After an hour of looking for caches we finally found one in the peace garden of ragel park. This one had a big container and the boys left more toys than they took.

Bryce is starting to learn how to write

Bryce watches and learns from his older brother so much. He is starting to learn to write after watching calen go through the process and practice.

Our feral cats

We have three feral cats. One is a great hunter and one is learning to be held and fed by the boys. They now have names. Magic, skiddy, and white flash. By the end of the winter magic will be domestic I'm thinking.

Bryce on the quad.

It is so fun to see bryce start doing things that only calen could do a year ago. Here he is on the electric quad 4 Wheeler. They tie a Wagon on it to move things around the yard. Bryce was so happy driving it and cute with his little bear hat under the helmet

Another day at the river.

We went to the river today.  Last minute decision to go.  Probably the last time this year.  We got so lucky that the sun was out and it was warm all day (like a summer day!)  We had the whole river to ourselves.  These photos are not from that day, these were off of Calen's camera and since we did not take many today I figured I would put these here.  There are some really cool rocks to jump off of into chilly and deep water. Most of the river is less than a foot deep, but these special areas are a place we go to often.

Halloween

For Halloween Calen was a knight and Bryce was an astronaut for the second year in row.  This is a photo from school.  Unfortunately the actual night of haloween was rained out this year. :-(
Still our neighbors had Candy so they doubled up at that house and still got to enjoy some sweets.
Oh, I almost forgot the most important part.  Alyson, our other neighbor, had the boys over for a couple of hours in the early afternoon.  They made some small bags of popcorn and did reverse trick or treating!  For a few or our lucky neighbors, the giving fairy came and left a nice treat on their door!  I love it when we make a new tradition that is so much more fun.

Sprites Night - Calen's Second Grade Play "The Lion and the Mouse"

Calen had a great time performing in the Second Grade Play for Sprites Night.  He started as one of the Story Tellers and was great speaking loud and clearly.  When a friend did not show up for the second shift, he helped out and became one of the hunters on the fly!

Bryce and the chickens

Bryce loves the chickens buy I don't think they love him back. It is pretty funny watching both boys chase the chickens around and go grab eggs from the hen house.
